Emeritus Professor of Chemistry and Visiting Professor at Bristol, he is recognized internationally in Physical Organic Chemistry (POC). He has pioneered ideas of phase-space models for understanding organic reaction mechanisms. He is a Fellow of the American Association of Science and has won the Cope Scholar and James Flack Norris awards from the American Chemical Society, and the Christopher Ingold Medal from the Royal Society of Chemistry. He has held Sloan, Guggenheim, Alexander von Humboldt research fellowships, and a Royal Society Wolfson Merit Award. He was Head of the Department of Chemistry at Cornell University (2001-4), and in 2006 he became Director of the EPSRC-funded Physical Organic Chemistry Centre at Cardiff University.
